In the last month or so I've thought and talked with some of my friends and others on this thing i.e only Namaz is not the only thing mosques are there for (even that we don't do ;( )....
Coming straight to the point, what I think is that the mosques should be used as community centers not just for offering prayers and doing nothing for people.
Whenever we give something to those who are begging in streets and etc we often hear some elders "don't give them ... they have made it a business" and when we ask them who are the real "haqdars" of these ... they say that they never beg and stretch their arm. We should find them and deliver their right at their door step. And we almost never able to find them.
If this thing is done through mosques it can get very easy. In mosques people from almost all the surroundings come and offer prayers, People from different economical background are also there .... If there is a fund in mosques for the needy and people contribute to the fund and if mosques point out those people through a committee or something like that, things would get damn easy and the needy would also not hesitate taking that from mosque (and their pride won't hurt) rather then given by someone personally .....
Similarly mosques can also help in carrying out marriages and helping if someone is jobless or etc. Mosque should and can also help in resolving minor family disputes by having some sort of counselor. The money can also be used for helping someone ill who is unable to pay for treatment.
MashAllah almost in all mosques there are people who can easily pay thousands of rupees just from their pocket money.
If transparency is ensured and things are carried out in the right direction we can easily help those who deserve and can stop someone from taking any extreme steps just out of depression or something like that.....
I have been to many mosques but never experienced any such thing being done. But there must be such mosques out there working as the community centers. On Television I've seen on a couple of occasions few of these things being done in mosques outside Pakistan but nothing here.
Hopefully we do try and implement these little things that can help us on a long term basis!

Man earns respect himself. Same case applied on mosque-bearers.
Anyways, that's what mosques were actually meant to be i.e community centers. Take a look at early history of Islam.
A little incident:
A friend of mine told me the other day that there were two mosques parallel on a street (near his home) and both belonged to clashing schools of thoughts. The mullas kept cursing, swearing and issuing fetwas against each other on the loud speakers and this only ended when police interfered and kicked their asses into lock-up! :D
I mean people need trust and that's what they don't get from religious authorities. They only get hatred and extremely shallow pretentious love.
BTW, the mosque that my father built served his purpose pretty efficiently. Don't know about now, though I doubt it does any more.
And people do come and live in mosques sometimes... and they do serve as community centres (somewhat) in Ramadan.
But you are right.. This should be done and our needy won't just be benefitting financially, but also be getting "Taaleeem" !
Why don't you go and talk to somebody at your local mosque.. see if there is anything that can be done.. Take the first step :):)

That's amazing sadqa-e-jariyah masha Allah :)
I really liked this idea.In olden days mosques were used as community centers. We should start using them again. Here too in smaller places they are a center for gatherin for meetings and to discuss issues pertaining to community.I go to a mosque every tuesday in manzoor colony where I see poor women and children, give them medicines and refer them to free hospitals for tests and operations etc., Other people can do their bit like teach boys computer skills.I know people and NGO's in Lyari and other poor areas where these boys who have learned the skills impart to other ones. this itself will be sadqa e jaria.Always start one step ata atime with dedication and sincerity, small things, teach and empower some poor or disadvantaged person.
Was out for sometime so commenting very late.
@ Meer
Thanks for commenting ... Well you are doing a great job by utilizing your profession for the benefit of mankind and that too through a mosque. Hopefully everyone (including me) has the courage and will to perform such activities.
@Umer Latif
Thats an amazing thing done by uncle(your father).
Don't know about now, though I doubt it does any more.
At least you can go and have a check of fewer of the issues as it was built by your father.

I have these kind of ambitions but hopefully i do get some courage to make these a reality. That is the biggest problem with me that the practicality is missing leaving behind only thoughts and ideas. :(
